Applying Legal Nursing Concepts in Hospice
In this webinar the presenter, who is both a legal nurse consultant and a certified hospice and palliative nurse, presents through case scenarios how legal issues and ethical issues in hospice care often intertwine. What are essential clues in agency operations, clinical care and documentation that something is amiss thus placing the agency at risk? And once determined, how do agencies then address these concerns through quality assurance and performance improvement?
The legal implications of nursing practice are tied to licensure, state and federal laws, scope of practice and the public’s expectation that nursing practice is at a high professional standard. The nurse’s educa- tion, license, nursing standards and experience provide a fundamental framework for nurses and they are expected to practice utilizing those principles. If a nurse’s practice is below acceptable standards of care and competence, then the nurse has higher potential to be involved in litigation.
